Peas for animal feed

Fodder Peas

Fodder peas (Pisum sativum) are a high-nutrient legume seed used widely as animal feed. They provide a balanced blend of protein, energy and fiber, making them valuable for livestock and poultry diets. These peas are protein-rich and packed with vitamins and minerals, supporting healthy growth, metabolism and immunity in animals. As a natural feed ingredient, peas also offer an alternative to soybean meal in many feed formulations.

Key Features

  • High protein (~22–24%) – Peas are an excellent plant protein source. This protein supports muscle and tissue development in animals.
  • Rich in fiber (~5–6%) – The fiber content aids digestive health. Fiber promotes gut motility and nutrient absorption, helping maintain a healthy digestive system.
  • Vitamins & minerals – Fodder peas contain B‐complex vitamins (B1, B2, B3) and vitamins C and K, along with essential minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium and potassium. These micronutrients support metabolic functions and immune health.
  • Versatile feed – Suitable for a wide range of animals. Peas can be fed to poultry (chickens, ducks, game birds), swine, ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats) and even many pet birds (parrots, pigeons, etc.). Farmers often mix peas into rations for dairy cows and pigs in place of or alongside soybean meal.
  • Soybean alternative – Due to their high protein and amino acid content, fodder peas can partially replace soybean meal and other protein supplements in feed. They deliver comparable energy and protein, making rations more sustainable.
  • Organic & sustainable – Grown without synthetic chemicals, these peas are certified organic and GMO-free. Using organic feed supports eco-friendly farming practices and cleaner end products.
  • Bulk packaging (tons) – Supplied in heavy-duty, tear-resistant sacks, typically in 1-ton bulk bags. This bulk format is ideal for large farms and feed manufacturers. (Small retail packs are not offered; product is sold by the ton.)

Nutritional Profile

A typical analysis of unprocessed field peas shows around 22–24% crude protein and about 5–6% crude fiber on a dry-matter basis. Peas are also relatively high in starch (energy) and contain little fat. In addition to macro-nutrients, fodder peas provide measurable minerals – for example roughly 10–20 g/kg potassium, 1.5–2.0 g/kg magnesium, ~0.1 g/kg iron and tens of mg/kg zinc – and contain vitamins (especially B vitamins and vitamin C) that support growth and immune function. This nutrient density makes peas a valuable supplement in balanced feed rations.

Usage Guidelines

Fodder peas can be fed as whole grains or coarsely ground, depending on the animal. Poultry and game birds often eat whole peas; ducks and chickens enjoy them as a treat. For finer diets (e.g. piglet or cattle feeds), peas may be milled or flaked. Many poultry keepers also soak or sprout peas before feeding – this germination (sprouting) increases digestibility and provides fresh greens. In practice, peas are mixed into feeds at rates appropriate for the species. For example, dairy and beef cattle rations often include a portion of peas (in place of soybean meal), while poultry feeds use peas as a 5–10% supplement to grains. (As with any feed, provide fresh water and balance peas with other feed ingredients – they should not exceed about 10% of a poultry flock’s diet when given as a treat.)
